Geotagging
I hit up this link on Wired today on geotagging. Since being on flickr, I’ve been dabbling in geotagging my pictures here and there since I travel a bit and sometimes like to log certain locations I shoot, especially when they’re not in the US. So far, though, they haven’t been easy to do with what’s currently available. My Nokia (e61i) has a couple beta software (SportsTracker and Location Tagger) that allow me to geotag via metadata in the pics shot on my phone via a BT GPS (TomTom). The nice part about SportsTracker is that I can log my trips and have the corresponding images linked to them. Very cool. But really, though, results haven’t been super, primarily bc I’ve only been able to capture some of the images with gps location and others are left to mostly technology (user?) errors.
Where I really want to geotag, though, has been pictures shot from a real camera and not a camera phone. There’s lots of talk to sync a gps logger’s clock with the camera’s and then later sync the metadata when you get back to your computer via another software. And then, open up your favorite image editing software to take care of PP. Yeah, it’s about as cumbersome and annoying as it sounds. So far I haven’t been able to find an easy solution yet.
Coincidentally, I was chatting with geo (no pun intended) last night about geotagging and he was mentioning that they were looking for the same sort of solutions while they’re out and about.
Geo, other than using a super expensive GPS add-on for the camera (which is not universal), the easiest thing I’ve been able to come up myself is to use the Nokia Location Tagger, take a shot if there’s a noteworthy location, and metatag the geotag when I get back. Again, yeah, that cumbersome.
If anyone knows if an EASIER way to do this, by all means, speak up!!
[Update] I was looking through Semson’s site (the same place I bought a SD to CF converter for the Eye-fi, which a Fry’s guy said it “doesn’t exist”. But I digress…) and found that they have a certain GPS data logger called PhotoTrackr that plays nice. I’ve seen this used on flickr by what seems to be quite a few users already. Click here to see what’s been taken already on flickr. I’ll have to look into this…. So far in the initial read, though, it doesn’t play nice with Macs. booo…. There’s always Parallels, for now.
More to come, hopefully.
How’s the camera in the IPhone? If the new one has GPS, geotagging would be simple, but it all depends on the camera quality again.
Does the Eye-Fi Explorer’s geotagging work only in cities? Would it work in…say…Yosemite?
Well, I don’t have an iPhone.. yet… and as rumor has it, the new one *might* have GPS… but still yeah, camera quality.
Eye-Fi Explorer, as I’ve read, is only good for cities and in the US, using certain wifi network’s locations. If i’m overseas, it’s as good as having nothing unfortunately.
Jon, did you see the new SportsTracker link I put up there? It links images! But, img quality sucks.
Thanks. yeah, I’m looking for something that will geotag RAW files. I can understand it not modifying proprietary RAW files, but maybe in a sidecar XMP file. Someone’s got to have something. I also need a solution that works for both PC and MAC, and Canon/Nikon/Olympus.
Simple huh.
@George: Yeah, i think possibly Phototrackr (although only a PC software for now) can serve the needs since it writes to RAW files for most most cameras. They have a list of cameras they support and are adding more along the way it seems. Check it out. As for the PC/Mac compatibility, as I mentioned, there’s always Parallels!
